Lifting Your Home – Home Refurbishments Ealing
Home Refurbishments Ealing
Ordinarily when homeowners are hit by flooding they have two options: One, move out and sell the property. Two, carry out a home refurbishment and pray the rivers don’t burst again. Now however, lifting your home is an option.
However, one determined couple whose home was ruined last year when the Thames burst its bank on their 5-bedroom home in Berkshire, did not let the flooding defeat them. They came up with an idea to elevate their house by 5ft!
The couple spent almost £80,000 raising their house. This took place over the period of 10 days. A team of building contractors used a steel cradle and 28 computerised jacks to lift the 80 ton house up at a rate of three inches an hour.
The 28 computerised jacks are capable of supporting 50 tons each. The engineers place them under the steel frames. Then the brick walls below the level of the concrete floors are sliced, severing the building from its foundations.
With the steel steadying the structure and the pressure spread evenly over the jacks, no single part of the building was exposed to stress when raised.
The gaps between the lifted house and ground are filled in with breezeblocks and then concealed with reclaimed London yellow bricks to match the existing. On completion an internal home refurbishment was carried out to repair and upgrade the décor.
The property was previously valued at £1 million before the floods. The value dropped alarmingly to £750,000 with over £125,000 in damages. The property could also not be insured against further flood damage. The couple considered rebuilding their home but this would have cost around £400,000. Lifting the house cost £80,000, it is now full insured and thought to worth £1.5 million – £2 million.
